Christmas Scripture Reading Plan – Day 3 + A Bonus Challenge :)

3 Dec

I hope you are joining us in preparing our hearts for Christmas with the 25-Day Christmas Scripture Reading Plan! We are on day 3 today, but it’s not too late to catch up if you are just getting started. I love that this is making me stop and really think about why we celebrate Christmas and what this birthday truly means.

Can you imagine being Mary and giving birth to the Savior of the world – in a stable, no less! When we visualize a stable, we usually think of a wooden structure similar to a barn where horses and livestock are kept. During those days, a stable was literally a cave and the manger baby Jesus laid in was most likely a feeding trough carved out of the side of the cave wall. It’s hard to imagine a darker or more dingy environment to give birth to any child, much less the Messiah.

Here’s today’s reading, along with the previous two days in case you need to catch up. The links will take you to where you can read each passage.

Our bonus challenge for today is this:

be kind

Think we can do this? It’s hard – I know that for a fact. When someone is not-so-nice to us, our reflexes kick into high gear and we tend to return the “favor.” I can think of specific instances where someone was rude, inconsiderate, or down right nasty to me and my reaction was, well – just bad.

Could you – could we – just for today, react with kindness when confronted with the opposite? Maybe that person is being mean or hateful because they are hurting. The holidays can be hard on a lot of people – those who have lost loved ones, those who are unemployed, those are very sick.

I wonder what might soften inside someone’s heart if, after they treat you in an unkind way, they are met with . . . kindness in return! It would likely be unexpected and possibly even welcome. Maybe this person needs kindness from you because they don’t encounter it anywhere else. You may have heard it said like this before: hurt people hurt people.

So today, I challenge us to be kind to everyone, but especially to those are unkind to us. Your smile, your gracious response, your encouragement could make an incredible difference in someone’s life. Let’s do it!

Hope your week gets off to a superb start!
