Do You Feel Overwhelmed?

25 Jun

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed today.  I wonder if you are, too?  So many people around me are hurting and it has left me feeling a bit weak and helpless.

My aunt passed away this weekend.  At 96, she had lived a good life, but still.  There’s a sense of sadness.  A friend has three family members who have been diagnosed with cancer in recent weeks – all very serious forms of cancer.  Barry’s precious 93 year old grandmother is waking each morning to intense back pain as the result of a fall she had a couple of weeks ago.  Another friend is watching her dad slip away and wonders how long she will have him.  A young girl is battling cancer and all of treatment’s evil side effects when she should be enjoying a carefree summer.  I could make a list a page long of friends and loved ones who are struggling with physical and emotional pain right this minute.

You don’t have to look far to see people who are hurting with big hurts.  As I looked through my prayer journal, I counted 14 people (my own friends or friends/family of friends) who have been diagnosed with cancer just this year – a few of them have been given grim prognoses and a couple of precious lives have already been lost to the dreaded disease.  It’s hard to comprehend with my small, human mind.

There’s a time for optimism and positivity, but sometimes that’s not enough.  That’s when I have to go to the source of my hope, to the One who reminds me that the things of this world are temporary and that someday – someday – we will experience an eternity where there is no pain, no sadness, no grief – only joy.

If you are one of those who are starting this new week with a heavy heart, I hope the verses listed below will encourage you like they did me.  There are many things we may never understand and we wonder why life has to be so stinking hard.  But we can always be assured that there is a God who loves us, who understands our pain, and who will help us walk through these valleys.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.  We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. – 2 Corinthians 4:7-9

Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. – Psalm 31:24

Cast all your anxiety on himbecause he cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:7

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. – Isaiah 43:2

Hoping you have a blessed day.

So sorry about your Aunt. It’s hard not to get down with all the tragedy around us on a daily basis but we must take comfort that our Lord has all things under control and he will shelter us during our darkest days. Hugs. Thanks for the Anniversary wishes as well.
